Lutsaga

Preserving Mijikenda music with respect, fairness, and community ownership.

Lutsaga is a living archive dedicated to documenting, preserving, and celebrating the rich musical traditions of the Mijikenda people of Kenya. Named after the Giriama word for “granary” — a communal storehouse safeguarding life’s essentials — the project gathers and shares the songs, rhythms, instruments, and stories that have carried memory and identity through generations. A funded project of social responsibility, Lutsaga pays all participants for their performances, ensures royalties are distributed fairly, and returns master recordings to the communities themselves. Working closely with elders, performers, and cultural custodians, we capture not only the music but the context, meaning, and spirit behind it, ensuring this living heritage remains accessible, relevant, and empowered for generations to come.
